A Merry Christmas Tea!

Merry Christmas, Dear Friends!

May you enjoy the simple pleasures this season, experience too many joy-filled moments to count, and receive the true blessing of being surrounded by family, friends, love and laughter.

I promise this post will be short and sweet since we are in the midst of holiday celebrations and everyone must be so busy, but I thought you might enjoy a little confectionery treat.

Today I am honouring my beloved mother-in-law, Ethel Ryan.  Ethel was a kindred spirit. We both loved the holidays.  I miss her every day and especially at Christmastime.  She loved tea and some of my fondest memories are of sharing tea together around her kitchen table in the quiet hours.

IMG_1833

I gave this sweet little figurine to Ethel one Christmas; she just adored sheep. Before she passed in November 2009, she wanted me to love it back into my own collection.  If you love Pinterest, and sheep, here’s a link to my board in her memory, “Beautiful Sheep for Ethel”:https://www.pinterest.com/lindam…/beautiful-sheep-for-ethel/

In addition to sheep, Ethel loved Christmas trees and had a devout faith; hence the gingerbread selection!

Since my last post, my husband and I created some new Christmas memories of our own.  We travelled together on a river cruise down the Danube, visiting European Christmas markets along the way in Hungary, Austria, Germany and Czech Republic.  It had been on my bucket list for decades and  was a dream come true.  I brought home traditional Christmas cookies from each region to share with you.  I hope you enjoy them.

This is the collection of traditional Christmas sweets that made it all the way from Europe just a few weeks ago (cookie plate: gingerbread hearts, sheep and tree from Budapest, Hungary; Bishop gingerbread figure from Vienna, Austria; Springerle biscuits from Nuremberg, Germany; Mozart Chocolates from Salzberg (on the border between Austria and Germany).

The little deer came from a Christmas market in front of Schonbrunn Palace, Vienna.

The Mason’s Pink Vista teapot was a gift from my husband many Christmases ago.

Fresh greenery adds a beautiful touch to any tea table. I like to elevate arrangements on fancy cake plates.

The beautiful two-tiered celebration cherry cake from my sweet friend Pam Picco who lives here in Newfoundland!  She is an extraordinarily talented cake artist.  I just love what she created for me.

What a romantic Christmas cake!IMG_1724

This teeny deer seems to appear everywhere around our house!IMG_1762

My pink transferware collection is made up of pieces gathered from yard sales and vintage shops but they all seem to work together.IMG_1870

These gingerbread hearts, like all the confections on my tea table, are truly works of art! I really admire the talent of these bakers.IMG_1822

The picture inside this tiny frame is actually the cover of a pretty Christmas card that my husband received from someone he works with.  I trimmed the image a little and slipped it into a frame for the tea table…

Springerele biscuits  are almost too pretty to eat, don’t you think!  We had a difficult time cutting that beautiful cake that Pam made but we finally managed to bring ourselves to do it…It was delicious and Ethel certainly would have approved!

I enjoyed your post. That cake is/was AMAZING! Your beautiful dishes and service pieces look lovely and elegant. Though I am not much of a tea drinker, your elegant table and exquisite array of Christmas treats make me want to sip a cup.

My husband and I also have a Danube river cruise to visit the Christmas markets on our bucket list. I’d love to know more about your trip! We hope to take the same trip within the next couple of years.

      Hi Carolyn,
Thank you for your lovely comments!
I’ll share photos of our European Christmas vacation at some point. I have so many that I hardly know where to start and I have less time for blogging these days. We travelled with AMA Waterways (AMA Prima ship) and it was amazing, highly recommend it. The crew was amazing and the sights were really something to behold. We loved the entire experience of visiting the Christmas markets in Hungary, Austria, Germany and Czech Republic, and each one offered something different. It was the trip of a lifetime for us and I had waited many years to do it. It was everything I had dreamed and more…
      Happy New Year!

What a sweet tribute to your mil! I love sheep and have been gathering a few new ones the last few years. Must check out your board. Your little deer is just precious, and that cake! Wow, what a talented gal she is. Those cookies are truly works of art. Is that trip the Viking River Cruise? That’s on my bucket list as well. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
    Happy New Year!

      Hi Lori!
Thank you so much for your wonderful comment today!
The stamp on the bottom of the figurine reads: “Angels Among Us, Betty Singer Collection, Samaco Trading”. This figurine was purchased so many years ago, so I’m not sure if it’s made still. It seems there are pieces to be found on eBay. If you scroll down halfway through this 2015 blog post (Kitchen Leftovers That Sparkle), you can see a lovely view of her. The link is here: https://beautifulideas.wordpress.com/2015/02/21/kitchen-leftovers-that-sparkle/
Good luck with the hunt. I hope you find her!
Wishing you a beautiful new year and thank you for visiting and for your interest in my blog.

Happy New Year, Linda! From the moment I logged onto your blog, I have been swooning! I adore red transferware and I too love to mix and match them. Oh my goodness, the confections are fabulous and how lovely to be able to bring some back from your wonderful trip. The poinsettia cake is beautiful! What a talent to turn out such delightful cakes! Now about the wee deer; they are so adorable! Sheep and deer are both favourites of mine. But I do believe the deer are the cutest I’ve seen. How precious they are and I’m sure they will be around your home even when the holidays are over. Thank you so much for sharing your lovely post with us.

    Blessings,
    Sandi

A cruise on the Danube sounds wonderful and the cookies you brought back from your trip are beautifully decorated. Your friend that made the cake is very talented, I know how much work it is to create something like that. Always nice to have some red transferware for Christmas too to go along with your festive decor.

What a beautiful tea in honor of your dear mother in law. I’m sure she’s smiling from heaven at you. Your red transferware collection is fabulous, as are the cookies and oh my, the cake!
